Marbella enjoys an unusually pleasant microclimate which attracted the Moores and the modern day Saudi Royals who maintain a complex of palaces in the town. The climate remains a main attraction for today's visitor.

The Sierra Blanca rises to over 1200 meters to the northwest of Marbella a further mountain range behind that rising to 1400 meters. The winds from the land that often bring extremes of humidity and temperature in summer are diverted around Marbella down the Rio Verde and Rio Guadalmina valleys to the west and Rio Fuingerola to the West. Although summer temperatures can soar to 40°C inland and on the adjacent coast they are more typically around 30°C in Marbella.

Similarly being protected from winter winds by the mountains the prevailing wind means Marbella "catches" the North African weather in the winter when the temperatures are usually in the teens °C. The average annual temperature is 19°C.

It rains occasionally from November to March with little significant rain for the rest of the year. The weather is sunny more than 320 days of the year.
